Sriracha Sauce is from Thailand, not Vietnam!!! September 29, 2006

OK, I just want to get this straight for those who continually take away credit where credit is due. The red “rooster chili” sauce found in numerous Pho and Chinese restaurants is NOT from Vietnam. It was originally concocted and made in Thailand, in the amphoe (provincial district) of Sri Racha. Actually, it is rarely used with noodle soup in Thailand. Its use is mainly limited to seafood sauce dips such as the famous oyster stir-fry dish called “aw suan”. Notice in the picture what sauce is there on the top left corner!

Now, for the sauce pictures…

Americanized version:

Made in Thailand!

Comparison between the “fake” and the real one:

Oh, and actually the taste isn’t the same (between the fake and the real one). The real one tastes a lot better and is spicier. The sauce is thinner and Thai people just love it a lot more. Too bad that the Huy Fong company registered the trademark “Sriracha” here first so when the real Thai company wanted to market it here, they couldn’t.  So now we’re stuck with the imitation one. If you’re planning a trip to Thailand and are going to the popular seaside city of Pattaya (which is very close to Sriracha), then you can try some seafood with the authentic sauce…or if you’re just in Bangkok, I’m sure you can pick one up too at a local supermarket.

Sorry, just a pet peeve when foreign companies steal Thai recipes and remarket them as their own…
